Events
1 standard unit per 50 guests for up to 4 hours. 100 guests = 2 units.
Longer events
Add 1 unit per 150 guests for each extra 4 hours on site. Round every step up.
Alcohol
Add 1 more unit per 150 guests when beer, wine or a bar is served.
Job sites
OSHA minimum is 1 toilet for up to 20 workers; we recommend 1 per 10 with weekly service.
Always
At least 1 accessible unit per cluster, plus 1 handwashing station per 3 toilets with food.

Porta potty calculator for events

This porta potty calculator applies our sizing method in whole numbers: guests divided by 50 for the first 4 hours, then extra units for longer events and alcohol, then accessible units and handwashing stations. Enter your numbers and the steps show exactly how the total was reached.

Method: Cameron Rental Works sizing guideline, based on the guest-and-hours charts used across the portable sanitation industry; OSHA counts are the federal minimum. The calculator assumes standard units with no service during the event. Indoor restrooms that guests can also use reduce the count; a mid-event service visit can replace extra units at long events.

    Event porta potty chart

An event of 100 guests for 4 hours needs 2 porta potties; 200 guests needs 4; 300 guests needs 6. Events of 4 to 8 hours add 1 unit per 150 guests, and serving alcohol adds 1 more per 150 guests. Round every step up to the next whole unit.

How many porta potties for a construction site?

A construction site with 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51. Larger crews need 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and 1 per 50 above 200 workers. To keep units usable between weekly services, we recommend 1 standard unit for every 10 workers on a 40-hour week.

Worked example: a 25-person crew. OSHA minimum: 1 seat + 1 urinal (one standard unit has both). Our recommendation: 25 ÷ 10 = 2.5, round up to 3 units with weekly service. Rule text: 29 CFR 1926.51. More in the construction porta potty guide.

    Adjustments that change the count

Four things change your porta potty count: a mostly female crowd, which uses toilets longer, so add 1 unit per 150 guests; children under 10, who need an accessible unit; indoor restrooms that guests can also use, which reduce the count; and hot weather, which increases drinking and use.

Not sure? Call with your guest count, hours and menu, and we will size it with you on the phone. Wedding planners can also see the wedding restroom counts, which include restroom trailers.

    Porta potty count questions

How many porta potties do I need for 50 guests?

For 50 guests at an event up to 4 hours, 1 standard porta potty is enough. Add a second unit if the event runs longer than 4 hours or alcohol is served.

How many porta potties do I need for 200 people?

200 people for up to 4 hours need 4 standard units. For 4–8 hours, plan 6; with alcohol, plan 8. Make 1 of them wheelchair-accessible.

How many porta potties for 1,000 people?

1,000 people for up to 4 hours need 20 units. An 8-hour festival with alcohol needs about 34, plus 12 handwashing stations if food is sold. Large events usually add a mid-day service visit.

How many porta potties for a 10-person crew?

A 10-person crew needs 1 standard unit with weekly service. OSHA's minimum for up to 20 workers is 1 toilet, but 20 workers on 1 unit fills the tank before the weekly visit.

Does a restroom trailer replace several porta potties?

A 2-stall restroom trailer serves about 120 guests over 5–6 hours, roughly the same as 3 standard units with a handwashing station.
