How many porta potties does OSHA require on an Ohio job site?

OSHA requires 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers on a construction site. Above 20 workers, the rule is 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. Above 200 workers, it becomes 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. For a 40-hour week with weekly service, we recommend 1 standard unit per 10 workers.

Legal minimum vs. what keeps units usable all week

11–201 toilet2 standard units
21–401 toilet seat + 1 urinal per 40 workers3–4 units, or 3 units + 1 extra weekly service

The minimum comes from OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51(c), Table D-1. Ohio private-sector job sites follow federal OSHA. The recommendation column is ours: a unit shared by 20 workers for five days fills before the weekly service visit. This is not legal advice; confirm site rules with your GC or safety officer.

What weekly job-site service includes

Weekly job-site service includes a full pump-out of the waste tank, a pressure wash of the floor and walls, disinfecting of every touch surface, fresh deodorizer, two new rolls of toilet paper and a sanitizer refill. The technician also checks the door spring, latch and vent, and logs the visit.

  1. Pump the waste tank to empty.
  2. Wash the floor, seat, urinal and walls.
  3. Disinfect the seat, door handle and latch.
  4. Recharge the tank with deodorizer (with winter brine from November to March).
  5. Restock toilet paper and sanitizer, refill the handwashing station if you have one.
  6. Check the door, latch, vent and level, then log the visit.

Busy sites can add a second weekly visit from $65. Tell us your crew size and we will say whether one visit is enough.

How construction porta potty billing works

Construction porta potty billing runs in 28-day cycles. The first invoice covers the unit for 28 days plus the one-time delivery and pickup charge. Each later cycle is the unit price only, from $165. The cycle renews until you call for pickup, so open-ended projects never need a new order.

Worked example: a framing crew of 8 needs 1 unit for about 10 weeks. Cycle 1 is $165 + $75 = $240. Cycles 2 and 3 are $165 each. Total: $570 plus Ohio sales tax, with 10 service visits included.

To stop billing, call or text by the last business day of the current cycle. Pickup happens within 1–2 business days. The full price list, including add-ons, is in the porta potty rental cost guide.

Placing units on Akron job sites

A job-site porta potty needs firm, level ground within 25 feet of where the service truck can park. Keep units away from trenches, crane swing zones and material drops. If the only spot is a street, curb lawn or sidewalk, the City of Akron may require a right-of-way permit before the unit goes down.

  • Mark the spot on a site plan, with a cone, or by texting us a photo.
  • Give gate codes and the name of whoever can let the driver in.
  • Gravel or packed dirt is fine. On mud or soft fill, ask us to bring a plywood base.
  • Winter: keep a plowed path to the unit. From November to March we add brine to the tank so it does not freeze.
  • Street placement: check with the City of Akron (Engineering Bureau) before booking.

Add-ons for construction crews

Most Akron crews add one handwashing station, a lock hasp for after-hours security, or a second service visit. OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities when workers handle paints, coatings or other harmful contaminants, so painting and roofing crews should plan a handwashing station from day one.

Construction job sites: questions renters ask

Can you deliver before my crew starts at 7 a.m.?

Morning requests go on the order, and the first deliveries start at 7 a.m. For a firm early start, take delivery the afternoon before. There is no extra charge for a day-early drop on a 28-day rental.

Can I keep the unit open-ended?

Open-ended rentals are the default for job sites. The unit stays and bills every 28 days until you call or text for pickup. You never need to rebook for a project that runs long.

How do I stop the billing when the job ends?

Call or text by the last business day of the current 28-day cycle. Pickup happens within 1–2 business days. Call before the cycle ends and no new cycle starts; cycles are not prorated.

Can I add more units halfway through the project?

Extra units can be added at any time and land on the same weekly service route. Each added unit has its own 28-day cycle, or we can line it up with your existing cycle on request.

Do you invoice contractors on net-30 terms?

Contractors can apply for net-30 invoicing after the first order. The first order is paid by card or secure link. Purchase order numbers and job names go on every invoice for your accounts payable team.

Who pays if the unit is tipped over or vandalized?

Damage from normal use is on us. Damage from vandalism, fire, vehicles or tipping is billed at repair or replacement cost. A lock hasp and a spot away from the road cut that risk.

Can a porta potty sit on the street in front of the job?

A unit on a street, curb lawn or sidewalk in Akron usually needs city approval. Most residential jobs avoid that by using the driveway apron or the side yard.
