Renting a Porta Potty in an Ohio Winter

A porta potty works through an Ohio winter when the tank gets a salt brine so it does not freeze, the path stays shoveled, and you avoid units with water lines in deep cold. Akron sees lake-effect snow and many nights below 20°F from December to February, so plan for both.

Do porta potties freeze in winter?

A porta potty tank can freeze below 32°F if it holds plain water and deodorizer. From November to March we add a salt brine to every tank, which keeps the contents liquid well below freezing. The brine is refreshed at each weekly service, so the unit stays usable on the coldest Akron nights.

Which units should you avoid in deep cold?

Avoid deluxe flushing units, handwashing stations and unheated restroom trailers when temperatures stay below freezing, because their fresh-water lines and pumps freeze. Standard units with brine and hand sanitizer work all winter. Restroom trailers can run in winter only with heat and protected water lines.

How to keep a winter unit serviceable

Keep a shoveled path from the unit to where the truck parks, and do not let plows bury the unit or block the truck. If a technician cannot reach the unit, service is skipped until the next visit. Place winter units on pavement or gravel, which stays firmer than frozen and thawing lawns.

  • Shovel a path at least 3 feet wide to the door.
  • Clear the door swing after every snowfall.
  • Tell plow drivers where the unit is; a flag helps.
  • Lake-effect bands can drop several inches fast; check the unit after storms.

Do winter rentals cost more?

Winter porta potty rentals cost the same as summer rentals at Cameron Rental Works. The brine is included in the weekly service. A job-site unit is $165 per 28-day cycle plus the one-time delivery and pickup charge, all year.

Quick answers

Is the toilet seat cold in winter?

Plastic seats do get cold in winter. Some crews hang a seat cover dispenser, and we can leave extra paper.

Can I put a heater in a porta potty?

Do not put a fuel-burning heater in a unit; it is a fire and carbon monoxide risk. Heated restroom trailers are the safe option for warmth.

Do you still deliver in snow?

Trucks run in snow. Severe-weather days can shift a delivery by a day, and we call you if that happens.
