Do You Need a Permit for a Porta Potty in Akron?

A porta potty on your own private property in Akron does not usually need a permit. A unit placed on a street, curb lawn, sidewalk or in a city park needs approval first, and public events in parks need a special event permit. HOA and venue rules apply on top of city rules.

Private property: usually no permit

Placing a porta potty on private property in Akron, such as a driveway, yard, private lot or job site, does not usually require a city permit. The property owner's permission is what matters. Renters and contractors should still follow HOA rules, lease terms and any site rules set by a general contractor.

Streets, curb lawns and sidewalks: get approval

A porta potty on a street, curb lawn (tree lawn) or sidewalk sits in the public right-of-way, and the City of Akron generally requires approval before anything is placed there. Contact the city's Engineering Bureau before booking, and allow time for review. Most homeowners avoid this by using the driveway apron.

Start at the City of Akron website and ask for right-of-way permits. Suburbs such as Cuyahoga Falls, Stow and Fairlawn have their own rules; each city page on our site links to the city.

Parks and public events

Events in Akron city parks need a special event permit through Akron Recreation and Parks, which can set the number of restrooms, placement and delivery times. Summit Metro Parks and Cuyahoga Valley National Park have their own permit processes. Food sold to the public brings in Summit County Public Health.

Accessibility for public events: at least 5 percent of units per cluster, never fewer than 1, under the 2010 ADA Standards.

How long do park permits take?

Allow several weeks for park event permits. Ask the park office for current timelines.
